Paper and waste management

5,500 trees a year could be saved if Rabobank Nederland and the local member banks were to use just ten percent less paper. This striking fact clearly inspires and urges us to reduce paper consumption in our organisation.

We reduce paper consumption by both changing our behaviour and by making technical modifications to systems and equipment lines. In 2004 we began offering electronic bank statements as an alternative to paper bank statements. The ultimate aim is to replace virtually all paper statements with electronic versions.

More than 65 million hectares of forest are currently FSC-certified. Sustainable forest management is the key focus throughout the entire chain of foresters, paper producers and printers.

According to FSC Netherlands, Rabobank is the first large organisation to make the transition to FSC paper on this scale. Jesse Kuiper, chairman of FSC Netherlands, applauds Rabobank’s initiative as a leading example of an involved bank’s sustainable operations.

Rabobank signed an agreement with FSC Netherlands in 2005. According to this agreement, Rabobank will only use paper that has received the FSC quality mark for envelopes, bank statements and stationery and copier paper. This means that 80% of all the paper consumed by the organisation is FSC-certified.
