Giro d'Italia

Giro d'Italia

The Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy), also simply known as The Giro, is one of the three Grand Tours; the others being the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.  The 2011 Giro will start in Turin on 7 May with a 19 km team time trial and end in Milan on 29 May with an individual time trial. It will be a tough race with 7 mountaintop finishes, one at the legendary Monte Zoncolan.

This year’s Giro will have a historic tone to it as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. The race will travel through places that featured prominently in the events surrounding the unification of the country, and will also visit other legendary Italian spots such as Sicilian volcano Mount Etna.

In 2009 Rabo rider Dennis Menchov won the Giro d’Italia in a spectacular finale. In 2010 the Giro started in Amsterdam and its second stage finished in front of Rabobank’s head office in Utrecht.
