The South American and European beef markets
A strong increase in exports since 2000 has prompted rapid growth in the South American beef sector and signs are that the region will continue to be the rising star on the world’s beef production horizon. In contrast, European Union (EU) beef production has been on the decline while consumption has continued to gradually increase. This gap in supply in the EU market has made it a net importer of beef, recently standing as high fourth in the world. As the world’s cost leader, South America is the main supplier of beef to the EU, accounting for nearly 94% of the EU’s imported beef. Nevertheless, the trade is continuously under discussion mainly due to import tariffs of the EU, sanitary problems, traceability and product positioning, although the EU will continue to increase beef imports from South America. This report aims to discuss developments of beef trade between South America and the EU, restrictions, business and investment opportunities for both South American and EU companies.
