Which way the wind blows June 2008
Installed onshore wind capacity in the EU-27 has grown rapidly over the past decade, consistently outpacing expectations. Rabobank expects this trend to continue, but the fastest growth will shift from traditional wind countries such as Germany to a number of new ones such as Ireland and France. The main factors determining wind farm development success are whether they can be built (or are allowed to be built) and whether they are economically viable. The former is mainly determined by legislation, grid access and public opinion, the latter by wind strength at the site and revenue generated through government support and/or sale of electricity. At the moment,
the main limiting — and delaying — factors for onshore wind development are grid access and permitting procedures. Rabobank has been active in the Dutch wind energy market since the 1980s. With Rabobank’s increasing focus towards clean technology, and the globalisation of the wind energy market, a more internationally oriented view towards investing in the wind sector has materialised.
