Japan's vegetable oil industry
Japan is one of the world's largest importers of oilseeds such as soybeans and rapeseed/canola, with an annual import of nearly USD 5 billion. Almost all vegetable oils in the country are produced from imported oilseeds that are crushed and refined domestically. FAR analyst Junn Chanoki has written an Industry Note to describe the impact of depopulation of Japan and the utilisation of oilseeds in biodiesel on this market.
