The rising income and higher population drive food demand, while environmental concerns, fostered by high petroleum prices are driving non-food uses. Rising income and population is being reflected in higher overall consumption and a shift in consumer preferences, with varying effects among developed and developing economies. Non-food demand is being materialised by a myriad of biofuels initiatives worldwide.
