The oilseeds complex

World demand for vegetable oils is prompted today by four factors: rising income, higher population, increasing environmental concerns and high petroleum prices. The rising income and higher population drive food demand, while environmental concerns, fostered by high petroleum prices are driving non-food uses. Rising income and population is being reflected in higher overall consumption and a shift in consumer preferences, with varying effects among developed and developing economies. Non-food demand is being materialised by a myriad of biofuels initiatives worldwide.
