FAR analyst Michael Whitehead (New York) in his report treats the main issues that affect the sugar beet segment in the U.S., or will affect in 2008: NAFTA, Farm Bill and DOHA; alternative crops; Genetically Modified sugar beet, and sugar for ethanol. Main conclusion is that given the flexible structure of the U.S. sugar programme, sugar beet producers are reasonably well-insulated against major shocks which may affect their sector, such as bad weather or crop disease.
