FDA approval of Rebaudioside A (a glycoside extracted from the stevia plant) as an ingredient has sparked a surge of interest in the product from food and beverage manufacturers, says a new FAR report launched today. Initial consumer response to Reb A sweetened products appears very favourable, but more time is needed to confirm that these trends are sustainable. Assuming the main potential challenges of Reb A (cost and taste) can be overcome, increasing production of the stevia leaves and improving refining scale and efficiency will be the main challenges facing the sector.
