Rabo art offer 2020: Statue of Liberty - Liberty for all

For the Rabo art offer of 2020, art affairs has joined forces for the third time with the Spanish artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo (1970). The Statue of Liberty (2019) by the artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo has been in the main entrance of the Rabobank office at Croeselaan 18 in Utrecht since August last year and has become a true public favourite. The five meter high “Lady Liberty” is now released in a living room friendly version of 40 centimetres.

Fernando investigates the role of public icons in his practice, he previously created a work about the Tank Man. Intensive research into the meaning and role of such an icon precedes the making of his work. What deeper meaning and subjects lie in the details of America's best-known image, or perhaps the world?

During his research, Fernando came across a relatively unknown historical rumour. The French artist and creator of the Statue of Liberty, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, is said to have initially made a concept version of a Lady Liberty with an African-American identity. The idea that this rumour might be true inspired Fernando to develop his own version of the statue. With his work, Fernando tries to initiate a dialogue on the role of public icons in our contemporary society.

Rabobank sees art as a barometer of society and therefore collects and supports artists who have their finger on the pulse of the times. Especially in dynamic and chaotic times it is important to listen to voices that differentiate from what we know. This also applies to Fernando, who with his version of the Statue of Liberty draws on long historical lines, but at the same time provides a sharp commentary on our present time and the major dilemmas we experience in it.

This small version of Lady Liberty is 40 centimetres high and made of maple wood. All statues are finished by hand and made of natural material, which makes all statues unique and may differ slightly from the photo. The statues are numbered, signed and provided with a certificate of authenticity. It is an open edition, the artist sees this as liberty for all.

Earlier this year, an interview with Fernando took place during the first corona wave.
