Value-seeking US consumers are reshaping foodservice and retail, with speciality formats and deals driving spending and loyalty in Q3 2025.

Credit and debit card data provided by Consumer Edge indicate that US consumers remained under financial pressure and sought value-driven deals when dining out and stocking up on groceries in Q3 2025. They occasionally ordered delivery as well.

Foodservice traffic remained in negative territory for the tenth consecutive quarter, despite showing some signals of improvement in Q3. High menu inflation and weak consumer confidence kept demand subdued, while delivery emerged as a convenience-driven bright spot. Rising check sizes provided only limited relief, leaving foodservice recovery dependent on improved consumer sentiment and greater economic stability in the coming months, which is not guaranteed. Sales performance remains mixed, largely based on the strength of value offerings.

Performance among food retailers also varied. Shoppers are not only seeking low prices but are also prioritizing strong value propositions. For some, this means seeking everyday savings at discounters, wholesale clubs, and big-box stores. For others, it means remaining loyal to premium and natural retailers that emphasize curated assortments and an elevated shopping experience.
