Africa - PBDAC Egypt
Rabobank is currently involved in several institutions in Egypt. The Principal Bank for Development and Agricultural Credit (PBDAC), a bank with 1,200 branche offices, 29,000 employees and some 3 million customers, often provides loans in cash or sacks of chemical fertilizer, seeds and pesticides – rarely on a bank account. Rabo Development is supporting PBDAC in an incisive transformation.
The bank, which is currently still part of the Ministry of Agriculture, is set to be privatised. The targeted market segment will be extended and the sales organisation fully overhauled. Rabobank is providing various long-term and short-term consultants every year, in various specialist banking fields. PBDAC is the only bank that succeeds in reaching millions of families in the agricultural sector and rural areas that would welcome an economic impulse from Rabobank.
In addition, Rabobank has been active since 2006 via the Horus Food and Agri Fund, an investment fund that together with EFG Hermes provides private equity to medium-sized Egyptian companies. Rabobank is represented on the board of the fund, enabling it to leverage its expertise in the fields of food and agri in full.
Finally, Rabo Development also provides the training and coaching for the new SME division of the Commercial International Bank of Egypt, enabling the knowledge and experience of Rabobank in these areas to be utilised in Egypt as well.
