Rabobank to Invest Further in Hagabank and Bank Hagakita --- Ambition to become the 'bank of reference' for SME banking in Indonesia --- Jakarta, Rabobank, the Netherland based financial services group announced today that it has completed the acquisition of the holding companies that own two Indonesian banks, Hagabank and Bank Hagakita, from the individual shareholders. All required approvals from various monetary authorities have been received and the acquisition has been effectuated. Rabobank will acquire 95% of the shares , while the remaining 5% will be retained by Anton Suleiman and Timoty E. Marnandus, two of the original shareholders as a show of their continued commitment to the further development of the banks.

Indonesia’s reliance on subsidized fuel has eventually sent the country into its worst nightmare when the oil price soared beyond US$50 per barrel last year. The government acted fast however, by announcing a national plan to reduce the country’s dependency on oil. The plan, called “Blueprint for National Energy Management,” was unveiled last May and it outlined the strategy to increase the use of non-oil energy sources in the national energy mix. While the blueprint emphasizes the use of coals and gas as substitutes to oil, renewable sources of energy are also expected to have a presence in the mix.

The Indonesian Poultry Industry Under Pressure in 2005

The year 2005 was very tough on the Indonesian poultry industry, especially after the government officially admitted the reemergence of Avian Influenza (AI, or H5N1) in several provinces on March 17. That particular incident had severely hurt the demand for poultry meat. Wary of eating infected chicken, consumers curtailed their poultry consumption – one of the cheapest forms of animal protein. In July, after the announcement of AI-related human deaths, poultry consumption dropped about 20%.
