Foot and Mouth Disease in Brazil
Beef ranks third, behind poultry and pork, in terms of global meat consumption. In 2005, approximately 50 million tonnes of beef were consumed, which represents nearly 25% of total meat consumption. In October 2005, FMD outbreaks in two of Brazil's main cattle-producing states gave rise to doubts about the safety of Brazilian beef. The sector is still distrustful of the situation and is expecting the Brazilian government to take a stronger line on current and further disease control.
