The German red meat industry

Germany’s domestic market for beef and pork is entering a new dawn. A market in which only efficient, and sufficiently large, companies operating at a low cost price or companies which cater to specific market segments will survive in the long term. The prospect of consolidation looms.

Investment plans to boost red meat slaughter capacity in particular will create overcapacity and heat up competition for pigs and cattle in Germany, which is already fierce, and result in higher than expected prices.
