The Japanese poultry industry

Japan is one of the largest consumer markets in the world and a large importer of poultry meat. Together with the EU it is the largest importer of added value poultry products in the world. Avian Influenza (AI) cases in Japan in April 2004 and in the whole Asian region had a strong impact on the Japanese poultry industry whose domestic market declined due to a temporary lack of confidence in poultry meat products. This Industry Note identifies factors that are important to the Japanese users and to poultry exporters intending to expand their business with the Japanese.
