Unzipping the banana market
Bananas are the leading global fresh fruit in terms of the volume of trade, with a trade value of almost EUR 6 billion. In contrast to the production of bananas (in 130 countries in the tropics) exports are very concentrated with five countries, accounting for around 70% of world banana export. The recent changes in the EU banana regime, which regulates banana trade flows in the EU, are attracting a lot of attention of the monitoring stakeholders. The impact of these changes on the banana (trading) companies differ, depending on their licences and sourcing area.
