Stefaan Decraene new Chair of Managing Board of cooperative Rabobank

Rabobank announced today that its Supervisory Board appointed Stefaan Decraene as Chair of the Managing Board for a term of four years. He will succeed Wiebe Draijer, who will stand down with effect from October 1, 2022, as previously announced, after completing his second term. The appointment is subject to the approval of the regulators and the advice of the work’s council. Stefaan Decraene is expected to start later this fall as soon as current responsibilities are completed. Chief Financial Officer and Managing Board Member Bas Brouwers will stand in for the Chair of the Managing Board on an interim basis.

Stefaan Decraene (born 1964, Belgian national) studied applied economics at KU Leuven and has over 30 years’ international banking experience, at both an operational and a managerial level. Among other things, he was CEO of Dexia Bank Belgium and the member of the Dexia Group Executive Committee with responsibility for retail and commercial banking. For the past ten years, Stefaan Decraene served as a member of the Executive Committee of BNP Paribas, where he was responsible for international retail and commercial banking.

The supervisory board of Rabobank is delighted with the qualities and experience Stefaan Decraene can bring to Rabobank: “In Stefaan, we have found a leader who is results oriented. He encourages collaboration and challenges people to work on their personal development. That is a perfect match for our bank's cooperative mentality," said Marjan Trompetter, Chair of Rabobank's supervisory board. "All the evidence shows that people enjoy working with him and for him. This is crucial, especially now, as it will help us fulfil our cooperative mission within society. Stefaan Decraene has successfully implemented major transformations at two major European banks. The supervisory board has every confidence that this highly experienced bank executive will enable Rabobank to increase its focus in the coming years on key priorities such as sustainability, climate and digitalization, and also on our responsibilities under the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act.”

Stefaan Decraene's arrival signifies the end of Wiebe Draijer's eight years as Chairman of the managing board, which Marjan Trompetter is keen to mark: "I would like to thank Wiebe once again for his significant contribution. Through his inspiring leadership, the organization has effectively been united and our shared mission of Growing a Better World Together became the guiding principle of our actions. He also succeeded in combining this with a revitalization of the cooperative and a strong focus on diversity and sustainability. In doing so, he has made a substantial contribution to a better cooperative and a better bank. This means his successor will be in a strong starting position."
