According to Daniël Poolen, Head of Sustainable Capital Markets, European sustainable issuances are developing as the macroeconomic environment evolves. “We are seeing a shift towards transparant structures and a broadening of the purpose of sustainable finance beyond climate change mitigation” he said.
Looking ahead
Sustainable capital markets are expected to broaden beyond their traditional focus on climate change mitigation. While renewable energy and energy efficiency will remain important in funding themes, growing investment needs in climate change adaptation are creating new opportunities in areas such as water management, physical asset protection and supply-chain resilience.
Alongside this broadening of scope, the market is increasingly favouring straightforward structures with demonstrable outcomes. Greater investor focus on transparency and measurable impact is encouraging issuers to prioritise use-of-proceeds categories backed by a clear pipeline of eligible assets. Continued uptake of the European Green Bond format is also expected, particularly among issuers with established sustainable finance frameworks and EU Taxonomy reporting capabilities. Together, these trends point to a market that is broadening in purpose while sharpening its focus on how sustainable impact is delivered.
