Investments in Cooperative Financial Institutions

To grow to the next stage and to be able to service more members, our partner SACCO in Uganda had to reach out to international investors to get additional funding. Mobilizing share capital, savings from customers and retained earnings weren’t sufficient to facilitate the demand for loans from their smallholder farmers and to finance the investments needed.

On Thursday, May 5th, Rabo Partnerships and the World Bank organized a webinar where we talked about investment approaches for quasi-equity and debt financing of CFIs. It was a great opportunity to address challenges in CFIs’ access to capital, a matter that was highlighted in the World Bank Symposium on CFIs and Rural Development, held last November.

We were pleased to hear interesting stories from EBO SACCO in Uganda and FED invest in Albania, but also to get insights from the investor side, as Robert Cheberiak, Managing Director at Développement international Desjardins (DiD) was one of the speakers in this webinar.
