Do It or Buy It? European Food Processors To Rethink Logistics Outsourcing Strategies

This report incorporates insights from interviews we conducted with major European food processors in 1H 2023 and discusses key factors in logistics outsourcing strategies. Although insourcing can bring competitive advantages in some cases, the changing food supply chain environment in Europe seems to favor outsourcing in many cases. While food processors need to add sustainability and reexamine other variables in their outsourcing-insourcing equation, cold chain logistics companies need to reconsider their locations, sustainability performance, and ability to offer integrated logistics services, as these will be key selection criteria by food processors.
