Global Daily: As US households light up their trees, government offices may go dark

US Congress is scrambling to reach a spending deal, after President-elect Trump effectively killed the draft bill that could find bipartisan support. Yesterday, Trump supported a re-worked proposal by House Speaker Johnson with the clear message “SUCCESS in Washington!” on Truth social. However, Democrats –and 38 Republicans– disagreed with that assessment, and the new proposal was resoundingly voted down. So it’s back to the drawing board, with just one day left before the Friday-night deadline to get a bill to President Biden’s desk. Failing that, the lights in some government offices may go dark, at the time US households are lighting up their Christmas trees.
