Global Daily: A wake-up call?
In her statement to commemorate the first 100 days of the current European Commission, President von der Leyen reiterated the importance of her REARM Europe plan in the face of concrete threats. She added that the potential of the €800 billion defence package would be even greater if Europe teams up with “like-minded countries, such as the UK, Norway, or Canada.” Notice who’s missing from that list? Von der Leyen still considers the US an ally, but added that “everything has become transactional.” She concludes that Europe does not have to ‘de-risk’ from the US, in a same way that the European Commission is trying to ‘de-risk’ its ties with China.
