Biological crop protection enters a more mature and selective growth phase in Europe

3 September 2026 13:00 RaboResearch

Biological crop protection is becoming a core part of European farming, with growth continuing to outpace the wider crop protection market. But as the sector matures, adoption is becoming more selective. The strongest opportunities are emerging where proven field performance, attractive economics, regulatory pressure, and value chain demand align, particularly in higher-value crop segments.

• Biological crop protection has become a structural component of European agriculture, and its growth is expected to outpace that of the overall sector. Rather than directly replacing conventional chemicals, biologicals complement chemical, agronomic, mechanical, and digital tools as part of an integrated pest management system.

• The biologicals market is maturing, making adoption more selective and dependent on proven field performance, farmer economics, value chain pressure, and product availability. The strongest growth pockets emerge where farmer pull, market push, and market opportunity converge, rather than across biological crop protection as a broad category.

• The primary opportunities for growth concentrate in a limited number of high-value crop segments rather than across agriculture as a whole. Fruits, vegetables, vineyards, greenhouse crops, and potatoes offer the strongest near-term growth potential. Grains and oilseeds represent significant longer-term opportunities due to their scale, but broader adoption will depend on technological advances and stronger farmer confidence. Bioherbicides remain a category outlier, largely due to the lack of sufficiently effective and economically viable solutions.

• As the market matures, competitive advantage will increasingly depend on the ability to identify attractive growth opportunities, allocate resources strategically, and build partnerships that provide access to technology, distribution channels, regulatory expertise, and end markets.
