Improving nitrogen-use efficiency with nitrification inhibitors in Australian cropping
Nitrification inhibitor fertilisers are not a universal yield booster. Their value lies in reducing nitrogen losses and improving nitrogen-use efficiency where nitrogen-loss risk is high. This report examines the evidence from Australian and international studies and finds that targeted use, rather than blanket adoption, offers the strongest economic and environmental case.
Nitrification inhibitors can increase nitrogen use efficiency, with potential benefits including lower nitrogen losses, reduced nitrous oxide emissions, improved yields, and maintained production with less fertiliser. On-farm returns are most likely when used strategically where nitrogen loss risk is highest.
