Development Bank of Ethiopia
The Development Bank of Ethiopia: bankers need better understanding of the agricultural sector and farmers need to better understand finance. Rabo Development can make the connection.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands mandated Rabo Development to design a support program for the Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE). This program was initiated to help Ethiopian banks to better understand and finance the horticulture sector. Horticulture and in particular flowers are booming business in and around Addis Ababa not in the last place due to investments of a group of Dutch flower farmers. The flower sector is relatively young and the banking sector of Ethiopia is in need of financial and sector training.
Rabo Development offered DBE an interactive training program. As of today, Rabobank consultants already trained about 20 staff members and 6 of them are chosen to be trainers for the remaining DBE staff members under guidance of the Rabobank experts.
The training on the financing approach, the file - and field visits are highly appreciated. Not only DBE, but also clients (of which some of Rabobank Dutch horticulture clients active in Ethiopia) are actively involved. To conclude the mission, DBE and Rabo Development will organize a workshop for other Ethiopian banks, active in financing horticulture, to share knowledge, experiences, tools and lessons learned.
