Talking points: Ultra-processed foods - What's changed?
Awareness of ultra-processed foods is rising, with studies linking them to poor health outcomes. The biological mechanisms remain unclear; opinions on next steps vary.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a report about the opportunities and risks of classifying foods as “ultra-processed.” Back then I described the health concerns over consuming foods and beverages that have undergone extensive processing as an “evolving story.” Since then, enough has happened (and not happened) to warrant a brief update. Here are four key observations:
- Consumers are increasingly aware of ultra-processed foods.
- Studies continue to link the consumption of ultra-processed foods with poor health outcomes, but the biological mechanism(s) involved remain unclear.
- Opinions widely diverge on what actions should be taken next.
- F&A companies have so far failed to capitalize on the opportunities.
