Climate change and market dynamics increase opportunities for tropical fruit production in Europe

8 September 2026 12:00 RaboResearch

As climate change reshapes production conditions and tropical fruit demand continues to grow, parts of Europe may become better positioned to produce higher-value crops such as avocados and mangoes. The opportunity is real but selective: It will emerge only where improving climate suitability overlaps with reliable water access, scalable production, technical capability, infrastructure, and premium market access.

Intro
Strong European demand growth, higher import unit values, and persistent reliance on non-EU supply make selected tropical fruits – especially avocados and mangoes – commercially relevant for European growers seeking higher-value alternatives to traditional fruit crops. Climate change is improving suitability in parts of southern Europe, particularly in regions along the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Existing production in Spain and Portugal shows how lower frost constraints, favorable microclimates, investment, and supply chain development are already supporting expansion. Our 2050 climate suitability outlook points to stronger potential around current production areas and in parts of southern Italy, Greece, and the eastern Mediterranean, but the opportunity remains selective rather than broad-based. Commercial success will depend on more than climate. To convert climate suitability into viable tropical fruit production, regions will need access to water, ample land, capital, and skilled labor. They will also require technical support, post-harvest infrastructure, marketing capabilities, and the capacity to manage weather extremes. European production is unlikely to replace tropical fruit imports, but importers could complement imports with local, higher-value supply that competes on freshness, quality, traceability, sustainability attributes, and premium or differentiated market positioning.
