RaboResearch has published its latest Grains & oilseeds world map. G&O trade continues to grow steadily, and multiple factors will influence trade in the next decade.

MAP 2025

The sixth edition of our Grains & oilseeds world map shows that G&O trade continues to grow steadily, reaching around 880 million metric tons in 2023/24 with an estimated value of USD 330 billion. Despite the sharp price spike caused by the war in Ukraine, trade volumes have increased over the past five years, albeit at a slower pace compared to the growth seen in the previous decade.

Since publishing our first G&O maps in 2003, the world has completely changed, and new dynamics are emerging. In 2001/02, developed countries led in both origination and importation. Currently, emerging markets are the key actors for almost all major grain and oilseed imports and exports, and they are further strengthening their trade relationships.

In the next decade, multiple factors are expected to influence global grain and oilseed trade flows. On the demand side, the growing population in Sub-Saharan Africa will drive increased wheat imports, while China may experience a slowdown or even a decline in soybean imports. Changes in biofuel policies are likely to affect oilseed crushing dynamics, and the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation is already reshaping traders' business models. Additionally, weather can always have a significant impact on crop yields and price volatility, while a more multipolar distribution of power will reshape trade relationships and strategic priorities across the value chain.
