Supply chain collaboration in the circular economy

Rabobank sees circular enterprise as one of the pillars of the Dutch economy, providing prosperity, well-being and a resilient and competitive economy in the long term. In short, ensuring a future-proof economic system, with businesses that have healthy earnings models – both individually and as a chain – and are therefore easy to finance.

Supply chain collaboration in the construction sector

In the Rabo Circular Economy Challenges we support companies in the development of a circular action plan. For the participating entrepreneurs the knife cuts both ways, because they also meet other entrepreneurs from the region who want to organize themselves more circularly as well. In practice, this regularly leads to good supply chain collaborations. The more concrete the demand of one party, the faster the other can respond to it. In that light, there are also businesses that are already asking their suppliers to supply circular products or services themselves. This so-called 'circular commissioning' is therefore certainly something we are trying to encourage. Both in our business – in the areas of procurement and buildings, for example – and in our customers.

At the New Year event of CSR Netherlands, our partner in the Rabo Circular Economy Challenges, a good example of supply chain management was presented on the stage. Holidaypark TerSpegelt presented a clear ambition: to establish three circular shortstay accommodations within a year. As participants in the Rabo Circular Economy Challenge Brainport, the construction companies VB Groep, Mullerafbouwgroep BV and M. Heezen BV were able to discuss the approach to this plan directly, in Eindhoven.

A design for the accommodations is currently being developed, the cooperation between the companies is well advanced and orders that are based on this cooperation are already being accepted. For example, plasterboards are taken from demolition projects and then refurbished into a neatly finished product that is reused in construction projects. In this way the boards are reused in the chain instead of being destroyed, and a circular economic model is created.
